Turkey ranks 3rd with COVID-19 vaccines

In the awards ceremony for the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and Turkish Academy of Sciences, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said "The studies of our professors have the potential to develop third COVID-19 vaccine candidates in the world" he said.

Erdogan, the President of Turkey, announced that to play a key role in the world, Turkey would continue to invest in vaccine development efforts.

The president, said in a statement Thursday that the vaccines developed in Turkey has come to the stage of clinical trials, like the other two vaccines developed world.

436 researchers conduct 17 projects on the vaccine and drug development

According to the World Health Organization, Turkey is has the world's third biggest Covid-19 vaccine project after United States and China.

"We started science campaign with TUBITAK Covid-19 Turkey Platform where 436 researchers conduct 17 projects on the vaccine and drug developmentā€ President Erdogan underlined.

Noting that Turkey's investment in this area is not limited to the pandemic period, Erdogan said that Turkey wants to be a key player in the international arena by producing and develop its own vaccines.

The stages of the vaccine development

Vaccine development studies are carried out in four stages, from the preclinical stage to Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3.

In preclinical studies, candidate vaccines are tested on animals to determine their safety and efficacy. At this stage, candidates are tested for side effects and whether they produce enough antibodies. The vaccine is then tested on humans at Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3.
